Protein powder can be an amazing supplement to your diet and to your fitness journey — a convenient, relatively cheap source of protein which can be used in all sorts of delicious foods: shakes, pancakes, cookies, and yes, even ice cream! But getting the wrong protein powder can be a nightmare. If you’ve ever tried a protein powder that was gross, chunky, and never mixed well, then you know what I’m talking about. So today we’re specifically talking about the best tasting vegan protein powders looking into next year.

While I’m not vegan myself, over the last several years, I’ve tried many of the most popular vegan protein powder brands in many different flavors. Along with public opinion from online reviews and social media, I’ll give each of the powders a score from 0 to 10 based on how good they taste. If you’re also interested in animal-based protein powders, you can check out my guides to the Top 6 Best Tasting Whey Protein Powders, and the Top 6 Best Tasting Casein Protein Powders.

The 6 Best Vegan Protein Powders, Ranked by Taste

6.

The best tasting vegan protein powders

PEScience Select — Chocolate Bliss

Protein Source: Pea, Brown Rice

This is a classic chocolate flavor from one of the big names in the supplement industry. PEScience is a favorite among many for their milk-based protein powders, which have a great texture and are famously great for baking. I am happy to report that their vegan series is also a success, with a similar texture and a smooth chocolate flavor with just the right amount of sweetness. Definitely give this one a try.

Overall score: 8.2/10

You can try this flavor out on the PEScience website or on Amazon.

5.

Nuzest — Smooth Vanilla

Protein source: Pea

Here we’re going with another classic flavor: vanilla. This is personally the best vanilla vegan protein powder I’ve tasted, and what’s crazy is that they were able to make it so smooth and so delicious with just 3 ingredients: pea protein, vanilla flavor, and thaumatin — a very uncommon sweetener, but it definitely works here. It is a bit on the expensive side, but it tastes great and boasts possibly the highest protein content of any vegan protein powder I’ve seen, so it may definitely be worth it if it’s in your budget.

Overall score: 8.5/10

You can try it out today on the Nuzest website or on Amazon.

4.

Orgain — Creamy Chocolate Fudge

Protein source: Pea, Brown Rice, Chia Seed

If you’ve purchased vegan supplements before, you’ve probably heard of Orgain. It is one of the leading vegan supplement brands today, and their creamy chocolate fudge protein powder remains one of the most popular vegan powders on the market, with thousands of five-star reviews and positive testimonials all over social media, due to its great taste and affordable price. Its only potential downside would be the slightly lower protein content (around 56% protein by calorie), but I’d say that is a small price to pay for everything it brings to the table. This will remain my go-to vegan protein powder, but there a few more options that manage to edge it out in terms of taste.

Overall score: 8.8/10

You can try this powder out on the Orgain website or on Amazon.

3.

Ghost — Banana Pancake Batter

Protein source: Pea, Pumpkin, Watermelon Seed

Now we’re finally on to some of the more bold and inspired flavors, and Ghost is probably the best brand when it comes to the more off-beat flavors (i.e., not chocolate or vanilla). This is by far the best banana-flavored protein powder I have ever tried, vegan or not. And if you’re thinking that banana protein powder sounds gross, you’d usually be right, but this honestly tastes like a rich, fluffy, banana cream pie. If you’d rather just stick to a basic chocolate flavor, that’s fine, and Ghost has that too (and it’s pretty good), but I’d urge you to give this a try and I bet you’ll be surprised.

Overall score: 9/10

You can try this flavor out on the Ghost Lifestyle website or on Amazon.

2.

Earth Chimp — Chocolate

Protein source: Pea, Pumpkin, Sunflower, Coconut

You may not have heard of Earth Chimp before, but you’ll be glad you did. I for one was intrigued by all the positive reviews and claims that it was the best vegan protein powder in the world, but after trying it… yeah, it really is that good. And despite the fact that it is labeled as a “protein shake mix,” it doesn’t have a ton of added sugar and fat like you might expect (but it tastes like it does!). It actually has a competitively high protein content and a taste that rivals some of the better whey protein powders out there.

Overall score: 9.4/10

You can try this flavor out on Amazon.

1.

Ghost — Peanut Butter Cereal Milk

Protein source: Pea, Pumpkin, Watermelon Seed

Now, reviewers online seem to be decidedly split on this protein powder: most love it, and a small but significant minority hate it — there is no in-between. So I am deferring to my own judgment here, the judgment of someone who loves Ghost and the taste of peanut butter. There is a very clear and natural peanut butter flavor thanks to the addition of real peanut flour, and the texture is very smooth and velvety. In my opinion, if you are a peanut butter fan, it’s worth a try, as this may very well become your favorite vegan protein powder ever. Otherwise, go ahead and try some of the other great options listed above.

Overall score: 9.5/10

So, those are the top 6 vegan protein powders based on my experience and the hundreds of polls and online reviews I read through. Please leave a comment below and let me know if you agree or disagree with my selections, and let me know of any amazing protein powders that I missed!
