Protein powder can be an amazing supplement to your diet and to your fitness journey — a convenient, relatively cheap source of protein which can be used in all sorts of delicious foods: shakes, pancakes, cookies, and yes, even ice cream! But getting the wrong protein powder can be a nightmare; if you’ve ever tried a protein powder that was gross, chunky, and never mixed well, then you know what I’m talking about. So today we’re specifically talking about the best tasting whey protein powders looking into next year.

Over the last 20 years, I’ve tried most of the top protein powder brands in many different flavors. Coupled with public opinion from online reviews and social media, I’ll give each of the powders a score from 0 to 10 based on how good they taste. Since whey is the most popular powder on the market, that’ll be the focus of this article, but you can also check out my guides to the Top 6 Best Tasting Vegan Protein Powders, and the Top 6 Best Tasting Casein Protein Powders.

Best Tasting Whey Protein Powders

best tasting whey protein powders

Myprotein — Chocolate Smooth

Myprotein is well known for its affordable prices and wide variety of flavors in protein powders. While some of those flavors are a little… questionable (don’t try the ‘peanut cookie’ flavor, just trust me), there are a few amazing flavors that make up for the rest. Chocolate smooth is probably the most popular flavor overall, and despite how overrated chocolate is as a protein powder, chocolate smooth is everything you could want in a chocolate protein powder — rich, smooth, and just the right level of sweetness.

Overall score: 7.8/10

You can try this flavor out on the Myprotein website or on Amazon.

Optimum Nutrition — Extreme Milk Chocolate

Optimum Nutrition is possibly the most recognizable brand in health and fitness when it comes to protein powder, and this is one of their most classic flavors. Much like Myprotein’s Chocolate Smooth flavor, it hits all the marks when it comes to chocolate protein powders, but it just narrowly edges the previous option out on taste. That being said, if you’re like me, you may find chocolate flavors to be a bit plain and boring, so the most we can give this one is an 8/10.

Overall score: 8/10

You can try this flavor out on the Optimum Nutrition website or on Amazon.

8.

Optimum Nutrition — Mocha Cappuccino

This next one is one of my favorites from Optimum Nutrition. Seriously, if you are a coffee lover, you need to try this flavor. The balance of the chocolate and coffee is done so well that, for me, this is an obvious upgrade to the basic chocolate flavor. Mix it with milk and some ice and you’ve got the perfect protein iced latte just like that. But hey, if coffee’s not your thing, no worries; we still have 7 more great flavors to go through.

Overall score: 8.2/10

You can try this flavor out on the Optimum Nutrition website or on Amazon,

7.

PEScience Select — Snickerdoodle

Now we’re getting to some more inspired flavors. PEScience Select protein, which is actually a whey-casein blend, is known for being exceptionally good for baking due to its extra thick and creamy texture, and their snickerdoodle flavor is absolutely perfect for making all sorts of cakes, muffins, waffles — you name it. And don’t worry; it tastes great just mixed with some water or milk, you just wouldn’t be enjoying it to its full potential.

Overall score: 8.5/10

You can try this flavor out on the PEScience website or on Amazon.

6.

best tasting protein powders

Myprotein — Salted Caramel

By all accounts, this may be the best and most popular Myprotein flavor ever made. Myprotein really nails the salted caramel flavor surprisingly well, with the perfect amount of sweetness and without the artificial aftertaste that you might expect from a sugar-free caramel flavor (after all, caramel is quite literally sugar). This is a must-try for sure, especially if you are a fan of Myprotein protein powders.

Overall score: 8.6/10

You can try this out on the Myprotein website or on Amazon.

5.

best protein powders

Ryse — Peanut Butter Cup

This protein powder flavor can be summed up like this: chocolate peanut butter heaven. Seriously, if you are a fan of Reese’s, you may end up like me, eating this stuff straight out of the container (don’t judge me). It actually contains real powdered peanut butter and cocoa, and the flavors are very rich and complementary.

Overall score: 9/10

You can find this flavor on the Ryse supplements website or on Amazon.

4.

Optimum Nutrition — Cookies & Cream

Yes, another Optimum Nutrition protein powder, but this is my personal favorite by a wide margin. It’s rich and creamy, with little oreo-like cookie bits all throughout. It’s incredibly versatile; it goes great in shakes, pancakes, banana bread, etc., and with no artificial flavor or aftertaste. But the real selling point for me is just how good it is just mixed with plain water. I always hated mixing protein powder with water, but this cookies and cream favor is just so creamy that it honestly doesn’t need anything else.

Overall score: 9.2/10

Try this flavor out on the Optimum Nutrition website or on Amazon.

3.

best tasting whey protein powders

PEScience Select — Gourmet Vanilla

Another great flavor from PEScience which is very reminiscent of vanilla bean ice cream. It is very rich and sweet, so much so that it works perfectly for baking protein cookies or cake, but may be almost too sweet when just mixed with water. I personally prefer the snickerdoodle flavor, but online reviews have repeatedly put gourmet vanilla as the best PEScience flavor.

Overall score: 9.3/10

You can try this flavor on the PEScience website or on Amazon.

2.

best tasting whey protein powders

Quest — Salted Caramel

As great as the Myprotein Salted Caramel flavor is, Quest has seemingly managed to perfect it. It is delightfully creamy, velvety in texture, with a soft tone of vanilla and a smooth caramel flavor with a hint of saltiness to complement the sweetness. It is quite a bit more expensive than the Myprotein or ON brands, but if you can afford it, you should definitely go ahead and try this powder out. Just note that the flavor and sweetness is a bit more concentrated than most protein powders.

Overall score: 9.5/10

You can try this flavor on the Quest Nutrition website or on Amazon.

best tasting whey protein powders

Ghost — Chips Ahoy

This may very well be the GOAT of protein powders, at least in terms of taste. A creamy vanilla flavor with delicious chunks of chocolate and cookie all throughout. Many reviewers online refer to it as the best protein powder they’ve ever tried, and I can honestly say that it is for good reason. Now, I should mention that it is a bit on the pricier side at $1.63/scoop if you get the 5lb tub ($1.73/scoop for the 2lb tub), but if you have the money, it is definitely worth it. We can’t give anything a full 10/10 score, but this is pretty damn close.

Overall score: 9.8/10

You can try this out on the Ghost Lifestyle website or on Amazon.

So, those are the top 10 whey protein powders based on my experience plus the hundreds of polls and online reviews I read through. Please leave a comment below and let me know if you agree or disagree with my selections, and let me know of any amazing protein powders that I missed!
